PRESS RELEASE
The Rotary Club of Belize constructs home for deserving single mother.
Today May 5, 2009 at 2:00 p.m., the Rotary Club of Belize is formally handing over a house to Ms. Adelita Aranda of 6432 Jasmine Street. The donation is the result of a partnership between Hand in Hands Ministries and The Rotary Club of Belize. The Rotary Club of Belize provided the funding for the construction of the home valued at $15,000. The labour was also provided by Rotarian volunteers. This home is the third to be donated in conjunction with Hand in Hand Ministries who provided the supervision of the construction and selected this deserving single mother of two children as the recipient.
Adelita’s Story:
Adelita Aranda is a single mother of two children, ages 7 and 5. She is living in a board house with her children, her mother and her stepfather. A while back, the house fell to the ground, and now, the floor is sunken into the ground. When it rains, water leaks through the roof/walls and collects on the floor. The family uses an outhouse, which is shared with Adelita’s sister and her three kids, who live in the other house in the yard. One bed is shared by five people (though Adelita’s parents normally sleep on the floor or, lately, have been begging lodging elsewhere.) Adelita works at Caesar’s Bakery as a cleaner and a baker. With the money Adelita makes and what her children’s father sends, there was not enough money to build another house in the yard or rent a new home.
The selection committee decided to construct the home for Adelita because she is a single mother who deserves such a home. Her house is not secure, and is in terrible condition. Adelita works hard to try to care for her family, but it is not enough. Adelita Aranda states - “Things are really rough, and, in her own words, she says that she hopes “having a house will enable me to help myself.”
Adelita and her family actively participated in the construction of the home.
