Low Income Housing Project
Total Proposed Yearly Budget: US$12,300 (US$6,150 per house)
Rotary Club of Belize Contribution: US$1000
Target Community: Mobile, Healthy, Working Poor Citizens with Children

There is a need for basic low cost/income housing in Belize City, our country's largest population centre. Many families, despite having jobs, live in squalor...unable to extract themselves from their current housing conditions because of various reasons such as the inability to borrow, children to support, or poor fiscal planning.
Over the last few years, the Rotary Club of Belize has built two basic 20X20 houses complete with bathroom facilities and electricity for two such needy families as part of a program with Hand in Hand Ministries from the USA. Construction supervision, family selection and follow-up are provided by Hand in Hand, with the labor and funding for materials etc provided by Rotary. The recipient family is also part of the construction process through in-kind labor.

The residents are required to sign a covenant that involves various restrictions such as keeping the area tidy, terms of occupancy etc. and must have title to the property the house is built on. Hand In Hand also provides occupants with skills training in order to assist them to find better means of income.
This project envisions the construction (initially) of two more houses. Like the previous, these shall be built by Rotarians, with each house taking two weekends to do, and with the usual construction supervision by Hand in Hand Ministries. The Rotaract and Interact Clubs in the City will also be included in part of this project to carry out tasks such as painting.
The project shall be overseen by a Committee set up by the Rotary Club of Belize.
